PERSONALITY TRAITS
Canary is flirtatious and feminine nearly all of the time, constantly setting up her cons, even in the heat of battle. She is confident to the point of arrogance, a trait she would refer to as a strength rather than a weakness. She refuses to open doors for herself believing that much less effort can be expended by giving a smile and a curtsy to have somebody do it for her. In public, she would portray herself as a dainty maiden, not fit for fighting, but would instigate a fight with her words if it served a purpose. She believes that cutthroat thieves are beneath her; if anything is worth taking, you can get it without force...at least not her own.
MANNERISMS AND APPEARANCE
Canary most commonly takes on the form of a shapely woman named Selena. With shoulder length blond hair (usually tied up in a ponytail now when adventuring), shimmering blue-green eyes and pinkish hued fair skin. She is very shapely, which is actually an embellishment on the 'original' Selena, a feature she will claim is needed to ply her trade or separate her from the 'original' to prevent being recognized. Unlike most adventuring women her clothing is entirely impractical, focusing more on showing off her form than protecting her. She would never wear unattractive clothing or armor that fully covered her body.
COMPANIONS AND ALLIES
SESSION AND CAMPAIGN NOTES
"How would I describe myself in one sentence or less..? Charming."
Canary was born to a well-off human family. Her mother, Julisa, who had been disguised as a human woman for quite some time, was supposed to bear a male heir to her husband. Until her birth, her father had no idea that Julisa was a changeling and afterward wanted nothing to do with Canary. He said that he would have been fine had she bore him a son, but that Canary could not stay with them in the main house, and would have to be taught to disguise herself as the child of one of their house servants in order to prevent any scandal over his house. He would never talk to her and regarded her as more of a nuisance, as he had to support her, but made it abundantly clear that she would never be accepted into his home.
Canary grew up knowing the deception her family played to the public and despised her father greatly. Julisa would take time in the evenings to try and teach Canary about how to harness her shape-changing and mind to overpower her enemies and get things she wanted. Julisa eventually bore a son, and an heir to the house, but died in child birth. At that time Canary was 15 and she was cast out never return to her home town, her mother's dying wish she chooses to believe was for her own good.
Taking heed of this, she leaves her father's home and moves to a neighboring large city where she searches for a viable mark that she can run her con on to live a comfortable life similar to what her mother had done. She found the richest man in town was a Baron who had taken a very beautiful woman as his fiance, Selena Mediore. Selena was a well known wizard who was a prominent public figure for helping the less fortunate. She taught some of the smaller children from the orphanage who had a hand for magic how to use simple cantrips and tried to promote good will towards the other children there. Canary used this as a way to get to know her and the Baron better, impersonating a young girl of age 10 and discovering that she herself had quite a knack for illusion magic. Over the course of a year, Selena developed her ability while Canary continued to gather information on the soon-to-be-married couple and began to get jealous of Selena's station in life.
After becoming frustrated one day after lessons, Canary used the fact that Selena was to be leaving town to put her plan into motion. She went to the Baron's home disguised as Selena and planned to bed in an attempt to become pregnant and as such have a claim to remain with him. Selena however returned home unexpectdly to find the two in bed. While shocked initially, she didn't want to alarm the Baron of the trickery played on him by her student so she lied to console him. Selena scolded Canary harshly in private and demanded she leave and never return to the town claiming the worst betrayal was that from her trusted student whom she wanted to adopt from the orphanage. Confused by jealousy and rage for denying her a chance at the comfortable life, Canary killed Selena in her sleep and took on her form again.
Canary wed the Baron a week later and lived a lavish lifestyle for only a day, realizing the Baron cared not for Selena at all, but for his standing in society and immeasurable beauty. The guilt of killing Selena weighed heavily on her, and she then took on both persona: that of Canary the con artist and of Selena the caring illusionist. She left the Baron citing a desire to adventure into the world instead of bear children, something Selena had mentioned as regret of getting married.
