PERSONALITY TRAITS
Marianna has always relied on her determination and idealism to see her through hardship. In fact, she is still unused to a life where she doesn't have to do so every day. It has occurred to her that her discomfort with the accepted lifestyle of a Queen may be a much stronger reason for her departure than finding a lost Tome, however important it may be to her.
She also feels some degree of guilt for leaving her people, but she trusts them, and she trusts her allies, whom she fought and bled with, to lead them. She believes that neither group will live up to their potential if they come to rely on her.
Returning home, Tome in hand, is still her greatest ambition, but improving the lives she touches, whether through great deeds or simply kind words, also matters a lot. Not just to improve her kingdom's reputation, but also because it is the central tenent of the ethics her parents taught her. When she thinks of it consciously, she views her behavior as honoring them... or at least their memory.

MANNERISMS AND APPEARANCE
Finery and jewelry are relatively recent additions to Marianna's wardrobe, and she still wears them somewhat awkwardly. One can often find her fidgeting with her rings or adjusting her elaborate headpiece over and over. Nevertheless, she has been convinced that these aspects of her appearance are important for projecting the prestige and power of Mandala. Now that the revolution is over, she wants her government to be accepted and acknowledged by other rulers, which sometimes requires dressing up far more than she is used to.
Her picture is a formal portrait that a local painter volunteered to do after the war. The session took much longer than expected, due to her fiddling, as well as occasional fits of laughter over how silly the whole situation felt. He was annoyed until she paid him well for it, despite the fact that he had volunteered. She did like the final product, even if she does think it idealizes her appearance a bit too much. There are no tan lines, or wrinkles, or scars, in the painting, but it's nice to think that some people view her as that beautiful.
Underneath all her robes and scarves is a weathered and toned body from years of living on the run. That strength has started to fade, however, which sometimes bothers and worries Marianna. She is afraid of even the perception of being soft. Having grown up the daughter of a poor cartwright, she also still possesses many underclass social cues and instincts, such as always eating every bit of food she is served, or using handshakes and shoulder-squeezes instead of nods and curtsies.

COMPANIONS AND ALLIES
At first, Marianna didn't want to bring anyone with her on the journey, but everyone around her insisted. She eventually relented, picking two people to come with her: Jocyln, a maid whose quick thinking played a key role in the final siege of the war, and Karle, the new official portrait-painter of Mandala. The former doubles as a bodyguard and confidante, while the latter is entrusted with the task of bringing back paintings to show the people the incredible places they have visited. Jocyln is cynical and acerbic, while Karle is even more idealistic than Marianna. The two argue frequently, which she *tries* to stay out of.
